Marshall McLuhan

Marshall Mcluhan is a communication theorist and one of the founders of contemporary media studies.

He came to the conclusion that the medium of communication can have, in the long term, more importance than the content it transmits, because it is an extension of the senses and, therefore, determines the way in which the world and society are approached.

For him, the balance that would be present in children would be disturbed by technologies and education.

Indeed, a medium is an extension of our senses, an active metaphor that allows us to translate our experiences into new forms.

We often think of media, technology; but the first medium is speech.

It is it that allowed man to let go of his environment and express himself in a new way. ( Twitter is an example): the media is an oral or written message above all : it is the most used communication channel of our day to express itself on our society.

Print, too, is a medium because it reveals informative content that affects the consumer public.

Indeed, its role is to transmit information from a transmitter to a receiver.

The media is prioritized according to the extent of their impact on the public.

What the theoretician Mcluhan wants to show, a medium, even if we think traditional, like speech or print is a dominant medium because it has the characteristic of blinding us to its first action.

We, as humans, offer a part of ourselves to the media, we let them into our unconscious, pushing us to follow the ideas we read on the «technological web»

I suggest that you read his book “Understanding the Media”, which is a guide to how to manage the influence of the media we encounter on a daily basis and identify them more easily:).

This book sheds light on our behaviour towards all its media
