What are the effects on self-esteem?
Social media has grown, and more so in the lives of adolescents. It is said that 90% of adolescents use social media. This is huge! We can therefore question the impact of the use of social media on the psychological functioning of adolescents.
A recent study by Woods and Scott (2016) examined the impact of using social media (MS) on different determinants of adolescent well-being, such as sleep quality, self-esteem, anxiety and depression. The results of this study indicate that adolescents who use social media and are more emotionally involved in their use have lower sleep quality. lower self-esteem and higher levels of anxiety and depression.
Futhermore, the use of social media often results in the teenager being confronted with various visual representations of young women and young men representing high standards of beauty in society. This exposure increases the number of times the teenager is likely to compare .
When the teenager compares to the decline, it can negatively influence their self-esteem.In the same vein, some authors have observed that adolescents can receive positive or negative feedback on their social media posts (opinions, photos, videos). These feedbacks can negatively influence self-esteem when negative
